Dual Infections Of TB And AIDS Make Each Harder To Treat

Tuberculosis infects nearly ten million people each year and kills nearly two million. It is primarily a lung disease that spreads easily among people with weakened immune systems. Sub-Saharan Africa is still the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS disaster, but it is also becoming the epicenter of tuberculosis.

MicuRx Pharmaceuticals and Cumencor Pharmaceuticals Partner with Pfizer to Discover and Develop Antibiotics for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in China

MicuRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of antibiotics to treat drug-resistant bacteria, and Cumencor Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the companies have entered a collaboration with Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) to discover novel therapeutic agents to treat multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Cumencor Pharmaceuticals is a China-based biotechnology company applying MicuRx’s proprietary technology platform to discover and develop novel antibiotics for MDR-TB.

North America’s Sole Manufacturer of MDR-TB Drugs Closing Its Doors

An Indiana drug maker that’s North America’s sole manufacturer of a multidrug-resistant tuberculosis drug is closing its doors after five years. The Purdue Research Foundation says the Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy and Contract Manufacturing was unable to become self-sustaining in part because of the recession.

WHO Releases New MDR/XDR Report

In some areas of the world, one in four people with tuberculosis (TB) becomes ill with a form of the disease that can no longer be treated with standard drugs regimens, a World Health Organization (WHO) report says.

For example, 28% of all people newly diagnosed with TB in one region of north western Russia had the multidrug-resistant form of the disease (MDR-TB) in 2008. This is the highest level ever reported to WHO. Previously, the highest recorded level was 22% in Baku City, Azerbaijan, in 2007.
