TB on the Agenda at the World Cup

Tuberculosis is on the agenda at the Football for Hope Festival 2010 – an official event of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa – which opened Sunday in Johannesburg. The week-long event celebrates the power of football for social change, with 32 teams of young people from disadvantaged communities around the world gathering for a festival of football, culture, education and entertainment.

Sign-on letter to UNITAID to release delayed TB funds

This sign-on letter was prepared by Lucy Cheshire, TB Advocacy Advisor, ACTION Project, Kenya. It calls on UNITAID to release grant funding to the Stop TB Partnership that has been “unnecessarily sidelined and/or delayed which threatens to exacerbate the spread of MDR-TB, derail the supply of paediatric drugs and undermine market shaping activities that are already underway or planned for both these crucial niches.”

Tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are the deadliest chronic infections globally. Although each is deadly alone, they are deadlier together, with TB causing oneâquarter of AIDSârelated deaths and HIV infecting at least 15% of patients with TB worldwide.
Free World TB Day Resources for African TB/HIV Advocates

African HIV Policy Network (AHPN), together with TB Alert, the UKâs national tuberculosis charity, is encouraging black African organisations to get involved in World TB Day, and is offering free resources and materials. TB Alert has just launched a new awareness campaign, âThe Truth About TBâ, with funding from the Department of Health. TB remains a crucial health issue, with over 8,000 people in the UK developing the illness each year. âWith World TB Day coming up on 24th March, itâs a great time to increase awareness about TBâ, says Elias Phiri, Head of Awareness Programmes at TB Alert.
