This Week in TB R&D – July 27, 2010

The route of drug delivery for TB drugs is an interesting one with the usual (and valuable) room for debate about different methods. While the standard mode of delivery for most drugs is oral, there is ongoing discussion as to whether aerosol delivery of TB drugs may be a more suitable route of delivery for treating pulmonary TB.

TAG 2010 Pipeline Report

Treatment Action Group (TAG) recently released their TAG 2010 Pipeline Report, an annual report that explores the progress and overall state of drug development in the fields of HIV, Tuberculosis, and Viral Hepatitis. The report covers the development of drugs, diagnostics, vaccines, immune-based therapies, and preventative technologies in development in each field.

This Week in TB R&D – July 20, 2010

On Friday, July 16th, the fourth annual New England TB Symposium took place at the Broad Institute, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  The symposium was in collaboration with the US-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program: 45th Tuberculosis and Leprosy Research Conference which preceded the symposium at the Broad from July 13-15th.

This Week in TB R&D – 13 July 2010

Last week we highlighted the Xpert® MTB/RIF assay for diagnostic testing. This week, we will briefly describe the GenoType® MTBDRplus assay. The GenoType® MTBDRplus assay uses PCR to amplify biotin-labeled amplicons (single-stranded DNA sequences) of M. tb from sputum.

TB on the Agenda at the World Cup

TBVI Releases 2009 Annual Report

TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI), a foundation that aims to develop new vaccines for tuberculosis, today released its annual report 2009. In 2009 TBVI made significant progress in its overall objective to develop new vaccines for tuberculosis. Preceded by many years of research and development, last year four vaccine candidates moved from discovery phase to early clinical development. Furthermore, TBVI expanded its network with several new research partners and completed the formation of its Board of Trustees.

Aeras Appoints New President and CEO

The Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation today announced that James E. Connolly has been named President and Chief Executive Officer. He joins Aeras after a career in the pharmaceutical industry, most recently as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Wyeth Vaccines. He will take over as Aeras President and CEO on August 9, 2010.
